On September 13th, 2017, Klei Entertainment surprisingly created a new beta branch for Shipwrecked, adding yet another bonus content update to the DLC. This would allow players to keep their progress as well as let them travel between Don't Starve's normal and RoG biomes and the new Shipwrecked biomes, thus allowing them to bring goods back and forth between the two and experience the game however they wish.
However, after much feedback from fans, it was decided that Shipwrecked would become a DLC instead. On September 3rd, 2015, it was revealed to be stand-alone in an official Rhymes with Play stream. It was originally speculated to be a large expansion for the single player game, similar to the Reign of GiantsDLC.
